Requirements for a Political Science Major and Minor

Political Science Major

Applicable to students (Freshman or Transfers) entering ETSU fall semester, 2004

    Political Science is the study of government, politics, and public affairs in the United States and other countries, and of the relations among nations and states in the world community. The Political Science curriculum is designed to provide students with factual knowledge of these subjects and with the ability to critically analyze and evaluate competing ideologies, governmental systems, political practices, and policy proposals, The study of Political Science prepares students to be informed and engaged citizens, as well as to pursue careers in law, government, public affairs, and many other fields.

    A major leading to a baccalaureate degree in Political Science requires completion of a minimum of 36 semester hours of study, including the following:

  ONE course at or above the 3000 level in each of the five sub-fields. All are 3 hour courses.

                  American Politics (AP)

                  Comparative Politics (CP)

                  International Relations (IR)

                  Political Theory (PT)

                  Public Law (PL)

 THREE courses to be selected freely from the Department's offerings. 9 hours.

 Total Hours for the Major: 36

Political Science Minor

 A minor in history requires the completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of study, including the following:

 ONE course at or above the 3000 level in any TWO of five sub-fields. Total: 6 hours.

 THREE courses to be selected freely from the Department's offerings. Total: 9 hours.

 Total hours for the Minor: 24

Transfer Students

 Transfer students who major or minor in political science, or who wish to do directed teaching in this department, shall earn a  minimum of nine hours credit and a minimum average of 2.0 in this department.

Teacher Education

 Students interested in pursuing a teacher education program for certification as a political teacher in grades 7-12 are asked to see the subject area advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences and the professional advisor in the Office of Student Services, 321, Warf-Pickel, College of Education.
