“Italy: Art, Culture, & Wood Fired Terracotta” with Don Davis June 10- June 24, 2010
A Two week experience at Castello Spannocchia in Tuscany, Italy
This two-week studio course serves as a vehicle to experience the incredible cultural and artistic history of the region and conversely the surrounding Tuscan landscape, art, and architecture provide inspiration for the work done in the studio. Rapid hand building techniques will be used and the course will culminate with the firing of our pieces in the wood fired kiln. Open to all levels from beginner to professional. College credit is available.
Join us for a memorable experience in one of the most stimulating places on the planet. This course is in its 4th year at Castello Spannocchia, a cultural gem in the Tuscan countryside near Siena. Summer 2010 is especially exciting because a new kiln based on ancient Etruscan design will be built before the course, finalized during the course & fired in our final week. Spannocchia is a self-sustaining agricultural estate dating from the 12th century that has also become a center for international study. Spannocchia produces it’s own wine, olive oil, and most of the vegetables, fruit, and meat served at meals. The course fee includes lodging, all meals, 24-hour studio access, all materials and firing, Italian lessons, use of the pool, hiking trails, wine on the terrace every day at 7, and course excursions to surrounding towns & cultural sites. Our group is housed in the Castello Fattoria, the delicious traditional Tuscan meals are prepared in Spannocchia’s kitchen, and the evening meal is always an event to remember served in the outdoor dining area. Cooking classes, car rental, & travel advice are available.
