        Established in 1985, this national art competition contributes to the promotion and appreciation of contemporary visual art in the region of East Tennessee and the bordering states of Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia and North Carolina. Positive/Negative provides a venue for students at ETSU and the surrounding communities to interact with diverse perspectives in art. The exhibition’s primary purpose is to encourage creative thinking through critical observation and exposure to new media. This year’s exhibition features 44 multimedia work representing at least 20 states; this year’s submission reached an unprecedented 145 entries from artists from New York to Alaska.

        Best of Show was awarded to Jayoung Yoon from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan for her sculptures "Dress" and "Chair" woven from human hair. Smith, Forrest Solis, Merrill Steiger, Denise Stewart-Sanabria, Dmitry Strakovsky, Millee Tibbs, Joey Tipton, Charity Jules Valentine, Sarah Wiseman and An Xiao.

        Juror Antoine Guerrero is the Director of Operations and Exhibitions at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and a pioneering institution devoted to contemporary art is renowned for its "cutting-edge approach to exhibitions and direct involvement of artists within a scholarly framework" that has significantly altered and defined trends in international contemporary art practice and discourse. As Director of Exhibitions, Guerrero has curated and installed shows that explore new and provocative artistic endeavors. His projects include: Greater New York 2005, After Matisse Picasso, Chen Zhen: a Tribute, Leo Villareal: Supercluster, and the 8th Annual Young Architects Program Competition.  He has worked in partnership with international art institutions including: Signatures of the Invisible, a collaboration with artists from the London Institute and Conseil Europeen pour la Recherche Nucl’aire (CERN) of Switzerland, Art Positions at the Art Basel Miami Beach 2007, El Real Viaje Real / The Real Royal Trip, and The Bird More Curious Than I with Exit Festival Cretail in Paris.  The juror also conducts art talks via Art Radio WPS1.org. The most recent was a 24-hour live broadcast during the 52nd Venice Biennale; previous topics include "The Armory Report" featured during the 2006 Armory Show and “Art and Law” at the Art Basel Miami Beach 2006. Guerrero presented a lecture about contemporary art in the context of P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center as an institution.

        The Slocumb Galleries is open to the public free of charge with gallery hours from Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with extended hours during reception.
