Compelling. Enduring. Fundamental.
History is an intellectual endeavor that is indispensable if we are to understand the human condition as being the result of an historical process that links all generations. The sheer amount of data that confronts us on an individual basis in the 21st century is many times more massive and more intense than at any point in prior history. Knowledge of the historical process that has brought us to this time and place enables us to make better judgments about the information, opinions, and events that constantly confront us. It is this knowledge and understanding that makes a degree in history an invaluable tool in the professional world.
There are many careers that are best prepared for with a degree in history. Law, for instance, is linked to the past. It grows out of the life and society of a culture. History is one of the best ways to prepare you for the legal profession. An increasing number of admissions to medical schools are given to students with training in history. The understanding about people and cultures that a student of history seeks is a plus for future doctors, particularly in an increasingly global culture. A background in history is virtually indispensable for anyone wanting a career in journalism or other areas of mass communication. A major in history is good preparation for taking the civil service exam if you wish to work in government. If you plan a religious career, history can enhance your seminary training. Recent ETSU graduates have also gone on to careers as teachers, librarians, museum curators, and archivists.
A degree in history from ETSU opens doors to a variety of professions that demand such skills as writing and research that are emphasized in our department. These skills along with the knowledge of humanity’s past are fundamental to many successful careers.
