Artistry. Passion. Opportunity.
Do you have a passion for music? Do you want to make music your life, or perhaps music will be your avocation while you pursue a professional career in another area? A degree in music could be right for you.
The field of music is vast and covers everything from music theory to performance to music history to the teaching of music. Those who study music education can look forward to a wide range of employment opportunities upon graduation. Advanced studies in music composition, conducting, performance, technology, and other areas will be the goal of some graduates. Others will teach in private studios, work in church music, go into music business, or explore opportunities in digital media, film music or the recording industry. Some will become professional performers. All will enjoy the opportunity to make music for the rest of their lives.
Music graduates have the skills desired by a wide variety of employers. They go on to study law or medicine (a 1994 study found that music majors had the highest percentage of admission to medical school), engineering, or architecture. The computer industry is filled with musicians, and a variety of businesses also recruit music majors. Why? Musicians have already learned to manage their time, to work with others in large and small groups, to listen well, to perform basic research, to work independently, and to think creatively and critically. These are skills valued by almost all employers. The American Bar Association even includes these in their list of “core skills and values.”
Music can help you achieve goals you might never have associated with playing an instrument or singing. Experience the satisfaction of developing your musical self at ETSU!
