Major Requirements Advisor

The Department of Communication offers a students a choice of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) with a major in mass communications and a concentration in advertising. For the baccalaureate degree, 120 semester hours of credit must be earned. In addition to meeting all departmental requirements, majors must meet the College of Arts and Sciences requirements for B.A. or  B.S. degrees. Students earning the B.S. may select the social and behavioral sciences concentration.

Other mass communications concentrations include broadcasting, journalism, and public relations. Those electing to major in any mass communications concentration may not minor in any other mass communications concentration. 

A minor is required of all students and may be selected from any ETSU program other than mass communications. Department of Communication programs in Speech and Theatre are permissible as minors for students majoring mass communications.

The advertising concentration major consists of prescribed sequences of 33 semester hours of course work. No more than 12 credit hours of transfer credit may be applied to the requirements in mass communications concentrations. 

In the mass communications major, 80 credit hours must be completed outside of mass communications (i.e., outside these course areas: MCOM, ADVR, JOUR, RTVF, PUBR) courses, and at least 65 of those 80 credit hours must be in traditional liberal arts subjects.

Mass Communications

Specialized minors of 21 credit hours may be designed for individual students in advertising and broadcasting with the prior approval of the department. The journalism minor consists of 24 credit hours of prescribed course work. No minor is available in public relations.
