ETSU professor receives achievement award for special flying effects

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Delbert Hall, associate professor in the department of communication at East Tennessee State University, has received a Meritorious Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for "Special Flying Effects Design" for "Hamlet" performed at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

During a special residency at UMD last April, Hall taught workshops on stage rigging, and he rigged the flying effects for the theatre's production of "Hamlet."

Hall designs and rigs flying effects throughout the United States. He is president of the North American Association of Flying Effects Directors and chair of the Entertainment Technical Services Association's workgroup that is writing a national standard for flying performers.

He recently conducted a rigging safety workshop, sponsored by the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, at Expo 2001 in Baltimore.

Spring brings numerous performances with flying effects for Hall, including four ballet productions and several musical productions of "Peter Pan," as well as a number of Easter productions.
