Q: What graduate degree is offered by the Department of Communication?

The Department of Communication offers the M. A. in Professional Communication.

Information about our graduate program is posted at the Professional Communication website. School of Graduate Studies will help you find more information on ETSU, degree programs, and graduate rules, policies and regulations. Of special interest to you should be the admissions section, where you can begin the application process by completing and submitting an electronic application.

Q. What do I need to submit to apply for the PCOM graduate program?

Begin by visiting the Graduate School on-line electronic application site, and completing and submitting an electronic application.

In addition to your application, send the following items to the Graduate School:

• official GRE scores;

• three letters of recommendation;

• all transcripts (from every institution of higher learning at which you were enrolled);

• a statement of purpose (The statement of purpose should tell us who you are, why you want to enter the program, and where you want to go with your M.A. degree.).

All non-native applicants are also required to submit TOEFL scores.

Q. Can I enter the PCOM program and start my course work in the spring semester?

Yes.

Q. What is the length of time needed to complete the PCOM degree?

The length of the PCOM program depends on the individual’s courseload and track of study. For planning purposes for a full-time student, it is best to think of the PCOM as a two-year degree program.

Q. Do I have to take the GRE? Are GMAT scores acceptable?

We do not accept GMAT or LSAT scores for entrance to our program. Only GRE scores are acceptable.

Q. Must I take the TOEFL?

If English is not your native language, you must submit an official TOEFL score.

Q. Does ETSU offer financial support to accepted graduate students?

ETSU offers a limited number of graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships.

Q. What is a tuition scholarship?

A tuition scholarship is a merit based award given to graduate students admitted to the graduate degree program for the first time.

A limited number of tuition scholarships are available to new degree graduate students.

A tuition scholarship award waives the tuition and maintenance fees for in- and out-of-state recipients.

Tuition scholarship recipients must register for at least nine graduate hours each term and work eight hours per week at their assigned location.

Graduate students may be awarded a tuition scholarship for no more than two calendar years in the master’s program.

Q. What is a graduate assistantship?

Graduate students admitted to the School of Graduate Studies and accepted unconditionally into a graduate degree program may hold a graduate assistantship.

Graduate assistantships can be in the form of teaching assistants, teaching associates, research assistants, or administrative assistants.

Graduate assistants register for at least nine credit hours each term and work 20 hours a week.

Graduate assistants receive a stipend and waiver of the maintenance fee. Out-of-state tuition is waived for all graduate assistants.

Q. Can a student hold a graduate assistantship and a tuition scholarship at the same time?

No.

Q. How does one apply for a graduate assistantship or a tuition scholarship?

If you are interested in a tuition scholarship or graduate assistantship, indicate so on the degree application to Graduate School.

When the degree application is forwarded to the department, the qualifications for an assistantship or tuition scholarship are reviewed as part of the admissions process.
