Master of Professional Communication Summary of Course Requirements A minimum of 39 hours of coursework is required for both the thesis and non-thesis options. No more than 30 percent of all courses taken in the program may come from 5XX7/5956 series or independent studies, problems, topics or workshops or any combination of these types of courses. Communication Core SPCH 5950 Communication Research Methods 3 credits SPCH 5330 Applied Communication Theory 3 credits MCOM 5037 Communication Law 3 credits Or MCOM 5030 Media & the First Amendment 3 credits MCOM 5040 Seminar in Communications 3 credits 5000-level Dept. of Communication Topics Course 3 credits 5000-level Dept. of Communication Elective 3 credits Total Communication Core 18 credits Communication Emphasis Courses in a single area within the Department of Communication (Speech Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, Broadcasting, or Theatre). Total Communication Emphasis 6-9 credits Cognate Areas of Emphasis Nine hours of related courses to be taken in one department outside of the Department of Communication with approval of the respective department chair. These courses are selected and structured by the advisor and student based upon the student’s experiences, interests, and abilities. The courses should complement the designated area of concentration. Total Cognate Area of Emphasis 9 credits Thesis For thesis student, the number of hours designated for writing and defense of thesis. Total Thesis 3-6 hours Elective For the non-thesis student, electives selected from courses in the Department of Communication. Total Electives 3-6 hours Comprehensive Examinations Following completion of 36 hours in the non-thesis option, the candidate will be eligible for comprehensive examinations. The examinations will be a written essay format and evaluated by the graduate faculty of the Communication Department. Students failing comprehensive examinations will be permitted to reschedule comprehensive examinations no sooner than one semester later. |
