Public Relations

The concentrations in advertising and broadcasting consist of prescribed sequences of 33 semester hours of course work. The journalism and public relations concentrations require 36 credit hours in mass communications, and public relations also requires nine credit hours in speech. In the mass communications major, 80 credit hours must be completed outside of mass communications courses, and at least 65 of those 80 credit hours must be in traditional liberal arts subjects.

No more than 12 credit hours of transfer credit may be applied to the requirements in mass communications concentrations. Specialized minors of 21 credit hours may be designed for individual students in advertising and broadcasting with the prior approval of the department. The journalism minor consists of 24 credit hours of prescribed course work. No minor is available in public relations.

Speech

The speech communication degree program offers a traditional major as a base for preprofessional study as a supporting program for career preparations in fields such as business, church operation, government service, health administration, the ministry, paralegal services, public relations, social service, and other professions involving public contact. It also provides pre-law preparation. A teacher education major in speech communication requires 29 credit hours; the minor, 24 credit hours.

Theatre

The theatre program provides preprofessional training in (a) theatre design and technology and (b) acting and directing. Professional opportunities include careers in theatre management, acting, directing, design, dramaturgy, and theatre technology with community, regional, educational, and professional theatre settings. The theatre concentration requires 36 credit hours of course work; the minor, 21 credit hours. A teacher education minor in theatre requires 24 credit hours.

Women's Studies

The Women's Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary minor offered within the College of Arts & Sciences. The purpose of the women's studies minor is to provide students with an interdisciplinary education about history, society, culture, politics, economics, and legal issues as related to women. The goals of this endeavor are to create an increased awareness of gender issues, foster individual development and decision-making, and encourage effective participation in our complex social world. Courses are designed to assist students in developing philosophical and historical perspectives on women; appreciating the contribution of women to the arts, sciences, and humanities; and making informed choices as individuals and professionals.
