RESEARCH  INTERESTS

 

Feminist theory and activism, family interaction, sexuality and the body, and the points at which these intersect.  Interest in Second and Third Wave feminist dialogues and positionings. Interest in how social reality and individual identity are constructed and experienced through communicative/performative practices.

 ADMINISTATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN WOMEN’S STUDIES

 

o        Co-author.  “Report of the Status of the ETSU Women’s Studies Program, 2000.”   Resulted in a budget award of $25,000 to replace our previous $4,000 budget.

 

o        Continue to successfully argue for increased sections of Women’s Studies courses, increased funds to support both graduate and undergraduate student workers and Director’s release time.  Secured the university president’s support of a new major.

 

o        Developed WS course criteria, WS Faculty criteria, committee voting procedures, program mission statement.

 

o        Author, Strategic Review for feasibility of Women’s Studies Major, 2004-05.

 

o        Author, Proposal for a B.A. degree in Women’s Studies.

 

o        Creator, Annual Notable Women of ETSU Colloquium, beginning in 2001.  A forum for ETSU’s distinguished academics to share their areas of expertise, and the journey that led them there.

 

o        Created partnerships with 30+ departments and programs across campus.

 

o        Recruited a 16 member Women’s Studies Steering Committee and a 26 member Women’s Studies Network across campus.

 

o        Recruited General Education courses to be taught with a “Women’s Studies Emphasis” designation.

 

o        Produced and directed a fundraiser for V-Day: Until the Violence Stops, bringing a benefit production of The Vagina Monologues to the Bible Belt, and raising $4600 for local shelters.

 

o        Instituted feminist film series, art exhibits, lectures, and performance events.

 

o        Supported student work through sponsorship of  recitals, theatre productions, donation drives, film festivals, Gay Pride marches, and a civic engagement trip to Washington, D.C.

 

o        Recruitment/Information booths at ETSU events such as the Major Fair, Multicultural Expo, Katrina Aid concert, Rock the Vote, Progressive Fair, Take Back the Night, Winter Cruise.

 

o        A leader in the first annual Gay Pride March on our campus and in our region in 2001.

 

o        Headed Katrina Relief efforts to help displaced students coming to ETSU and displaced children coming to schools in our region.

PROFESSIONAL CONSULTATION

 

1996                     Purdue Cooperative Extension, West Lafayette, IN.  Human sexuality and improvisational theater training and directing for a group of Indiana teens.  Culminated in a video by and for Indiana teens for the purposes of aiding in teen pregnancy prevention.  Video was produced for distribution throughout the state of Indiana.
