Department of Communication Majors

Mass Communications

All mass communications majors must complete at least 90 credit hours outside mass communications. That is, these credits may not come from advertising, broadcasting, journalism, or public relations courses.

Of these 90 credit hours, 65 must come from areas designated by the department as liberal arts. In selecting courses for the liberal arts requirements, students should choose courses from departments within the College of Arts & Sciences, with the exception of Social Work. Courses from the following departments are included as liberal arts:

Chemistry
Communication  
(Speech and Theatre courses count as liberal arts, as does MCOM 4037 Communications Law.)

Department of Communication Minors

 

Mass Communications

Specialized minors of 21 credit hours may be designed for individual students in advertising and broadcasting with the prior approval of the department. The journalism minor consists of 24 credit hours of prescribed course work. No minor is available in public relations.

Theatre

The Department of Communication maintains checklists tracking the progress of students majoring in its programs. These checklists are circulated to students with campus mail boxes each fall and spring semester prior to preregistration periods. Students may review the checklists with advisors by appointment.
