Welcome to the East Tennessee State University Department of Communication web site. The Department of Communication has six separate disciplines represented within it and offers majors and/or minors in Advertising, Broadcasting, Journalism, Public Relations, Speech Communications, Theatre, and Women's Studies, as well as a masters degree in Professional Communications. The department's four mass communications concentrations are accredited by the highly selective Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC). The program is designed to provide professional preparation for students interested in communication and theatre and to provide leadership for professionals now engaged in the practice of communication. The department provides pre-professional programs and supporting coursework for students completing programs in other fields. The department also seeks to increase the public understanding of the value of freedom of communication in a democratic society. While some specialized skills are essential to enable students to meet current standards, the goal of the various curricula is to produce graduates who are independent professionals capable of growing and changing with the times. This site provides information about our various undergraduate degrees, our faculty, scholarships, our Master of Science degree in Professional Communications, and more. With state of the art facilities, an exceptional faculty, and many online resources, our program presents students with outstanding opportunities for preparation in a broad range of fields.
