About Us

If you major in or study journalism, you are interested in newspapers, magazines, photojournalism, online and broadcast news media. In ETSU’s journalism program you’ll cover a campus beat and develop stories to offer the university’s student-run newspaper. You will team with Spanish-language students and interview recent immigrants and migrant laborers to produce the annual bilingual El Nuevo publication. You will gather and write stories to pitch as freelance pieces for regional and national magazines. You’ll create photo essays, write about sports, develop columns, review movies and the arts; or learn to write effective letters to the editor as well as effective headlines and photo captions. You’ll consider the impact of celebrity and entertainment journalism and the need for investigative and depth reporting. You will design and edit, harnessing the power of visuals and the precise word. You’ll examine the mass media through history, study law as related to publication of information and news, weigh ethical issues. The result: a range of media understanding—from colonial broadsheets to converged media organizations that have print, broadcast and online distribution outlets. By expanding your knowledge of producing news, you become a more savvy consumer of news.
