ETSU's bilingual news project cited in "Shaping 21st Century Journalism" report

The New America Foundation report "Leveraging a 'Teaching Hospital Model' in Journalism Education" recognizes East Tennessee State University's student-produced bilingual newspaper in an article about successful community projects. The university publishes El Nuevo Tennessean each spring as a tabloid distributed free of charge throughout the region.

The October 2011 report notes how American journalism programs can become "anchor institutions" in today's evolving news media environment by engaging in community initiatives. The bilingual newspaper project began in 2000. In its early years, Northeast Tennessee's newspaper publishers took turns printing it as an annual service to their readers and the community. In 2011, the project became a stand-alone publication. Lakeway Publishers of Morristown printed and distributed the magazine in 2012.

El Nuevo Tennessean is a collaboration between the ETSU Department of Communication, the Department of Literature and Language and the Language and Culture Resource Center. Students contribute writing, photography, design, videography, translating and interpretation services for the print and online editions.
