Service to the
Academic Profession
Department Goal: Serve the academic profession by
carrying out professional journal editorial functions,
organizational service, consultancies, and other activities.
Our faculty are on five editorial boards.
One faculty member served as the editor of an
international journal.
One faculty member served as the editor of a special
edition of a national juried publication.
Two faculty members have a monthly column in a state
professional newsletter. These columns have been reprinted
in regional and national publications.
One faculty member was president of a local professional
society.
Our faculty are vice presidents of two local professional
societies.
One faculty member was a chair of a division of our
national professional organization.
One faculty member was on the board of directors of an
international professional association.
One faculty member chairs a division of our national
professional organization.
Our faculty are conducting a demographic and
psychographic examination of the academic life of
communication professionals that is sanctioned and partially
funded by our national organization.
Service to the
Region
Department Goal: Serve the region through special
programs, seminars and/or workshops, consultantships,
teacher-training institutes, grant programs, and other
intellectual and cultural activities.
One faculty member was the executive producer of 50+
Public Television, half-hour shows.
The faculty consulted professionally with 20 separate
organizations.
One faculty member offered the campus a short-course on
accountability.
Our faculty offered the campus and the community six
theatrical productions.
One faculty member offered organizations a workshop on
producing newsletters.
The department created a Professional Advisory Committee
to serve as a conduit for feedback and information between
the faculty and the professional community.
One faculty member produced weekly Johnson City Council
Meetings aired weekly on television.
Service to the Health
Sciences
Department Goal: Work with health sciences to provide
support courses, programs, faculty collaboration, and other
connections needed to enhance this aspect of ETSU’s
institutional mission.
The Department of Communicative Disorders terminated
their undergraduate major. The department worked with the
Department of Communicative Disorders to develop a new
concentration in speech communication that would accommodate
the undergraduate students who would typically major in
Communicative Disorders. The Department of Communication
completed the curriculum change process that allowed for the
accommodation of students interested in preparing for a
graduate program in Communicative Disorders.
One faculty member worked with the College of Medicine to
develop a course in Medical Reporting.
One faculty member worked with the College of Medicine in
developing the oral competencies of its students.
The department created a course in Health Communications
in conjunction with the Department of Public Health.
