Diversity in Acting

Purpose

The purpose of the ETSU Theatre Diversity in Acting Scholarship is to provide supporting funds for deserving out of state students who are active theatre majors in the Division of Theatre at ETSU.  

Description

The scholarship fund will be used to award scholarships to out of state students majoring in Theatre. Scholarships will cover tuition for fall and spring semesters for four years, assuming student continues to meet the criteria.

Criteria

A scholarship applicant who applies for the scholarship as an entering freshman must graduate with a 2.5 high school GPA. A scholarship applicant transferring from another college or ETSU discipline, must have a 2.5 overall GPA, and a 3.0 average in Theatre to be considered for the scholarship. In order to continue as a recipient from semester to semester and year to year, the student must:

  1. Maintain a 3.0 average in Theatre and 2.5 overall average.
  2. Audition for a role in an ETSU Theatre, faculty-directed production each semester. Those who audition, if not cast, must work on a construction crew, running crew or in some other aspect of production, such as stage management. Involvement of ten hours per week is required.
  3. Enroll in and complete a theatre course each semester.
  4. Enroll as a full-time student at ETSU, majoring in Theatre.

Students who fail to comply with the criteria for scholarship maintenance will not be continued for additional semesters or years on the scholarship program.

Selection

Applicants must present two contrasting monologues. The total time for the two audition pieces combined must not exceed four minutes. This audition may be placed on video-tape or DVD and mailed to the committee for consideration. A resume and at least two letters of recommendation are required.  

Scholarship applications should be submitted to Professor Herb Parker. The Division Head shall appoint a Theatre Scholarship Committee. The committee will select scholarship recipient(s) based on the above listed criteria and on competitive auditions/interviews.

The Scholarship Committee will notify students of the results of the competition by April 15. The Scholarship Committee will forward the names of the scholarship recipient(s) along with the pertinent information to the ETSU Financial Aid Office.
