Appalachian Studies Minor
College of Arts and Sciences
East Tennessee State University
The Appalachian Studies minor is an interdisciplinary program for students who would like to gain a greater appreciation for the history and heritage, problems and potentials of the Southern Appalachian region and who may be interested in pursuing careers in the region. To complete the Appalachian Studies minor, students are encouraged to take "Introduction to Appalachian Studies," SOAA, and then select 12 hours of electives from at least three different departments. The senior-level seminar, "Current Issues in Appalachian Studies," SOAA 4997, is a required course making a total of 18 hours to complete the minor. Students are encouraged to design a course grouping in consultation with the Appalachian Studies coordinator that suits their personal and professional interests.
Guided electives may include (1) regularly offered courses with regional content, (2) topical or special problems courses with regional content and (3) independent studies courses arranged with the permission of the instructor and the coordinator of the Applachian Studies minor. "Appalachian-Scottish Studies," ENGL 4957/5957, sponsered by the Center for Appalachian Studies, the English Department, and the University of Edinburgh, may also be applied toward the minor. No more than three credits taken as part of the Appalachian Studies Minor may be counted toward a major in any field.
