The Office of International Programs is responsible for coordinating and assisting development of the university's teaching, research, and service activities in the international arena, including advising international students. Current information on study abroad programs, international faculty exchange, grants (such as Fulbrights), and other opportunities is offered through the office.

The office assists in curriculum planning, community outreach, and linkages with universities abroad. Other responsibilities include sponsoring lectures and seminars on international topics and serving as a liaison between the business community and the university in matters of international interest.
Because students who graduate from college today cannot be considered educated unless they have knowledge about and sensitivity to global affairs, East Tennessee State University encourages students to include among their courses those that will help them gain a wider vision of the history, politics, society, and culture of other people and other places. Among the suggested courses are the following:

    ENGL 3320 Literature in Translation
GEOG 3300 Geographic Foundations of World Power
HIST 4707 The Far East in Modern Times
HIST 4717 A Survey of the Middle East
HIST 4817 Revolution and Nationalism in Latin America
HIST4717 A Survey of the Middle East
PHIL 3220 Religions of the World (West)
PHIL 3230 Religions of the World (East)
PSCI 3830 Government and Politics of Latin America
PSCI 3870 Government and Politics of South Asia
SOAA 2040 Folk Culture in the Modern World
    SOAA 3110 Minorities
SOAA 3800 Religion, Society, and Culture
ECON 4527 International Trade and Comparative Economic Systems

Foreign Languages

Students at ETSU are encouraged to study a foreign language. We are rapidly becoming a bilingual society and individuals with facility in a second language have a greater variety of job and study opportunities open to them. The Department of Foreign Languages should be consulted for further guidance.

Study Abroad

Students who may find it helpful to study in a foreign college or university for a year, or a semester, or a summer, should first determine in what country they wish to study. Once that determination has been made, the Office of International Programs can help the student identify a program of study in the selected country and can facilitate matriculation into the program and determine the level and the amount of credit that may be earned in such a program. Students interested in studying abroad should begin application at least six months in advance so that all the required procedures, including the obtaining of passports and required visas, may be carefully followed.

Study Trips

The Department of Foreign Languages offers summer study trips to France, Germany, Scotland, Costa Rica, and Spain. Summer in Great Britain is offered by the departments of History and English. The university also offers a junior year of study abroad at the University of Edinbrugh.

Campus Activities

A number of events designed to focus on international activities at ETSU take place periodically:

    International Education Week
    International Convocation
    International Film Festival
    Foreign Students Awards Banquet
Participation in the Model United Nations International Foods Day

International Students Organization

The International Students Organization is made up of undergraduate and graduate students from abroad. Students choose offiers and plan a number of activities, including an annual dinner, an intermural soccer program, and a speakers bureau.

International Clubs

French, Spanish, and German clubs are open to all students.

International Student Services

Assistance is available to meet the special needs of international students. The international student advisor acts as a liaison between the university and the local community, and the international student and provides special opportunites and activities through the international student organization and selected community agencies. The advisor, Maria Costa, is in the Office of International Programs and is located in Panhellenic Hall. Telephone (423) 929-6179.
