Requirements for a History Major and Minor
History Major
A major leading to a baccalaureate degree in history requires completion of a minimum of 33 semester hours of study, including the following:
HIST 1110 and 1120: World Civilization 6 hours
HIST 3410: Introduction to Historical Method 3 hours
2 3000-level courses 6 hours
5 4000-level courses 15 hours
1 3000- or 4000-level course 3 hours
Of the 24 hours taken at the 3000 or 4000-level, at least 6 hours must be taken in each of the general areas of U.S., European, and World History.
Attention: HIST 3410, Introduction to Historical Study, must be taken by all History majors. It should be taken following the completion of HIST 1010 and HIST 1020, PRIOR to the enrollment in any upper-level (3000/4000-level) courses.
Attention: HIST 4417, Teaching History is for those students who are seeking an endorsement Secondary Education, with an Education Minor. HIST 4417 does not count toward a History major or minor. It is a course we teach for Curriculum and Instruction and you should not enroll in the course unless you are an education minor.

History Minor
A minor in history requires the completion of a minimum of 21 semester hours of study, including the following:
HIST 1110 and 1120: World Civilization 6 hours
3 4000-level courses 9 hours
2 3000 or 4000-level courses 6 hours
Of the 15 hours taken at the 3000 or 4000-levels, at least three hours must be taken in each of the general areas of U.S., European, and World History

Advising for History Majors and Minors

Transfer Students
Transfer students must meet the specific requirements for the history major or minor. Regardless of the number of credits in history which they transfer, they must take a minimum of two 3000-level courses and three 4000-level courses for the major or one 3000-level course and two 4000-level courses for the minor.
Transfer students must maintain a minimum average of "C" in courses taken in the department.
Teacher Education
Students interested in pursuing a teacher education program for certification as a history teacher in grades 7-12 are asked to see Dr. William Burgess, Roger-Stout Hall 109, (423) 439-6691, and the professional advisor in the Office of Student Services, 321, Warf-Pickel, College of Education.
