Notetaking Programs

A few helpful programs you can use while doing research.

Scribe: In order to get the program you must download it from GMU. When you download it, save it to a temporary file folder on your C: drive. If you do not know how to create a folder, Go Here. It will come to you as a compressed (*.zip) file. In order to install it on your computer, you must first decompress it -- that is, separate out all of the files in the zipped package.

In order to do this, you will need a decompression utility. Such programs are widely available for download. If you do not have one already, go to one of the following sources.

Each of these will have a search engine resident on the page. Type in "compression utilities", and you will be given a list of what is available for download. Some will be freeware, some shareware, careware, nag-ware, and so forth. Chose one or two and download. Down load to a temporary foler on your C:/ drive. Install on your C:/ drive, according to the instructions. Most will download as an "executable file" ("something.exe"). Open your Windows Explorer, go to the correct folder on your C:/ drive, find the downloaded file, and double-click on it. It should begin to self-install. If it does not, or appears to be another kind of file, look for a READ ME attachment.

Once your decompression utility is installed, download your note-taking program to a temporary folder on your C:/ drive.

When the *.zip file has been downloaded, open your compression utility. You should see a "Open" button. Click that and then tell the program were to look for the file (hopefully, in your temporary folder).

Cardfile
Cardfile is a program that was standard in Windows 3.1. It was a handy little e-version of the trusty 3 X 5 notecard. Surely you have an old Windows disk lying around or know someone who has one.

Create a new file folder on you C: drive and drop the program into it. Make a shortcut for the desk top and you are ready to roll.
