Location

Paris, the capital of France, is also the nation's economic and cultural center. Students will have the opportunity to visit historical sites such as the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, Notre Dame, and the Champs Elysees.

General Information

East Tennessee State University will offer its 19th Summer in France from May 21 to June 26, 2006. Participants will attend formal classes in Paris during May and June and make field trips to surrounding cities and nearby points of interest. East Tennessee State University has contracted with ACCENT, a study abroad organization, to assit with the Paris program.

Living Arrangements

Participants will stay at student dorms in Paris or with families within Paris. Home stay includes breakfast. There is a $450 supplement for homestay.

Faculty

Faculty is comprised of native French professors and French professors from American universities. The director accompanies participants on all organized tours.

Credits

Students may enroll for up to nine semester credits. East Tennessee State University is the credit-granting institution. Transcripts will be sent free upon request.

Academic Program May 21 to June 26

During this period, participants will attend formal classes taught by American and French professors. In addition, they will visit numerous sites in Paris and the Paris suburbs. On weekends they will visit Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Giverny. There will be a series of activities, including lectures on local customs and contemporary issues, sports events, film evenings, and two performances of ballet, opera or classical music.

The program covers tuition for nine (9) semester credit hours by ETSU transcript, housing, excursions and transportation. Not covered: airfare, personal expenses, meals except where specified, passport and visas*.

* Visas are not required for the duration of the program for U.S. citizens. Non-US. citizens should contact the French Consulate regarding visa requirements.

Students will receive an International Student Identity Card with a limited worldwide accident health insurance policy. If you do not have comprehensive insurance that will cover you while you are abroad and would like more information on insurance policies for student travelers, please contact ACCENT at (800) 869-9291.

Group Flight: ACCENT will organize an optional round-trip group flight from a major East Coast city to Paris on a regularly scheduled airline. Airfare is not included in the program price. Estimated price of airfare is $900-$1000. ACCENT cannot guarantee space on the group flight after February 23, 2006.

Eligibility

The program is open to men and women at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Qualified high school seniors graduating in May 2006 will be accepted in the program and receive college credit. Students must be 18 before the start of the program.

Cost

Total cost of Program: $4900*

* The breakdown in this payment schedule includes a $150.00 refundable security deposit.

* Prices are subject to change based on the number of participants enrolled.

Payment Schedule

The payment schedule is the appilcants contractual obligation. Failure to make each payment when due shall automatically cancel participant from the program one week after payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by the ACCENT San Francisco Center. ACCENT, in its sole discretion, may reinstate an applicant subject to availbility of space and late enrollement fees. All prices and fees reflect exchange rates current as of 11/05 and are subject to change. ACCENT charges a $20 bounced check fee for each check received that is not promptly paid by your bank in the normal course od business.

All cancellations must be made in writing to ACCENT and are effective the date of receipt by ACCENT.

Course Offerings

* FREN 1010. First-Year French (3 hours) - Elementary grammar, pronunciation, and conversation. For students who have never taken French.
* FREN 2010. Second-Year French (3 hours) - Prerequisite: One year of college French or two years of high school French.
* FREN 3010. Advanced French Conversation (3 hours) - Prerequisite: Two years of college French. For the development of greater fluency in speaking and writing correctly. Emphasis on idioms, syntax, and current expressions.
* FREN 4337/5337. French Phonetics and Pronunciation (3 hours) - Prerequisite: Two years of college French. Elementary grammar, pronunciation, and conversation.
* FREN 4957/5957. Art at the Louvre Museum (3 hours) - A study of the major schools of painting at the Louvre Museum and other art museums in Paris .
* FREN 4957/5957. Coontemporary French (3 hours) - Prerequisite: Two years of college French. The culture of France today with emphasis on social, political, and economic issues
* FREN 4957/5957. French Study Tour (3 hours) - All program participants should enroll and will receive credit for this course which comprises lectures and the cross-cultural experience acquired during the stay in France.
* FREN 4900/5900. Special Studies in French (3 hours) - Designed to provide opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to study areas not provided in the summer curriculum.

NOTE: Course 5900 is for graduate credit. Courses listed with a 4957/5957 number may be taken for undergraduate or graduate credit. Please note that extra work and an additional fee are required for graduate credit.
