During Fall 2004, the ¡Hola! Tutoring Program was initiated as a continuation of the ETSU Summer Migrant Education Program. From 2004 - 2011 ETSU students tutored migrant children in the schools and homes of selected migrant families and other at-risk Hispanic children. Since Fall 2011, Hola Tutors have been helping out at the COALITION 4 KIDS after school program in Johnson City.
Special Topics courses, such as The Migrant Experience, have given ETSU students the opportunity to provide three hours of tutoring per week during the academic year, provide follow-up support to migrant children as they return to the regular classroom, and give preference to Priority I children. Priority I children have either had their education disrupted during the school year, moved within the past 12 months, or the student is at risk of failing in his/her schoolwork.
