Welcome to Composition@ETSU. Whether you are a student or an instructor, you will find information, resources, and links in this site about a variety of topics related to the practice of college writing.
The purpose of composition courses at ETSU is to prepare you to write academic essays, research papers, and other documents while studying at the university. The courses also prepare you for the writing and communication situations you will experience in your work after graduation.
The Department of Literature and Language at ETSU offers two first-year courses devoted to the study of academic writing and research: ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1020. The university requires that students take ENGL 1010 during the first eligible semester they are enrolled at ETSU. The department offers ENGL 1010L, which is a learning support version of ENGL 1010. The department also offers honors composition courses, ENGL 1018 and ENGL 1028.
International students can also study English as a second language in ENGL 1006/1007 and ENGL 1008/1009. These courses include labs.
For students who would like to continue their study of academic and professional writing beyond the freshman level, the department offers "Advanced Composition," ENGL 3130 and "Computers, Writing, and Literature," ENGL 3134, as well as various technical writing courses.

Yes, we do have a sense of humor...
And we recognize controversy.
What is the value of a college education? Is it just to get a good job, or can it be something more?
"No one more sincerely wishes the spread of information among mankind than I do, and none has greater confidence in its effect towards supporting free & good government." --Thomas Jefferson
