UETCTM

The Upper East Tennessee Council of Teachers of Mathematics is an organization for anyone involved in mathematics education from preschool through college in the greater Tri-Cities region. We meet six afternoons a year in various locations across the region.

 

Usual schedule: Refreshments and gathering 4:00, Business meeting 4:30; Program(s) 5:00 - 6:00.

Meetings are typically on a Monday or Tuesday afternoon as determined by the board. They have been at elementary, intermediate, middle and high schools as well as Northeast State and ETSU.

Description: We will show different games, art projects, math learning stations and large group activities to use to teach the math common core standards.

Description: Creating CRA tasks from basic algebraic problems and how to teach the tasks with little effort on the teacher's part.

More Than One Way to Add or Subtract?:Developing Meaning for Addition and Subtraction
(For Grades K-2)
Presented by Andrea Fissel—Johnson Elementary and Amanda Cole—Kennedy Elementary
Participants will explore a variety of strategies and tools students use to make sense of addition and subtraction.  Examine how students explain their thinking using words, pictures, models, and numbers.  Understand the problem types as referenced in the CCSS and how to incorporate these in your classroom.

Helping Students Understand Fractions
(For Grades 3-5)
Presented by Theresa Feliu — John Adams Elementary
Help students explore conceptual and procedural understandings of fractions through tasks and classroom routines that are easy to incorporate in your classroom.  Fraction models and connections with other domains, such as measurement, will be shared.


An In-depth Look at Ratios and Proportional Reasoning Throughout Middle School
(For Grades 6-8)
Presented by Sunshine Light and Christy Free — Ross N. Robinson Middle School
Participants will engage in an activity to explore the progression of ratios and proportional reasoning throughout the span of grades 6-8.  Participants will also walk away from this session with a ready-to-use instructional task.


Common Core—Coming to a High School Near You!
(For grades 9-12)
Presented by Amanda Waits—First District Regional Mathematics Coordinator
Participants will take a brief look at the  Standards of Mathematical Practice and  Mathematical Content for high school courses.  Learn about the structure, coding, conceptual categories, domains, clusters and standards of the CCSS.  Engage in a CRA-type task applicable for Algebra, discuss how to score the item, and review samples of student work.

The 2013 conference will be held September 27-28 at Memphis University School in Memphis. (UETCTM hosted the 2011 TMTA conference on September 23-24 at ETSU.)

NCTM has one national and several regional conferences a year. One regional NCTM conference was in Nashville in 2009.

The next NCTM annual conference will be held April 17-20 in Denver, CO.
