Thank you for your interest in the East Tennessee State University Middle School Math and Science Scholars Program, administered by the ETSU Center of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE). This program will involve ETSU faculty members from the following areas: Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Chemistry, Department of Computer Sciences, Department of Mathematics and the Department of Physics.
The goal of the Middle School Math and Science Scholars program is to allow academically able students to learn from and engage with ETSU math and science faculty and to encourage young students to pursue career opportunities in STEM fields. The curriculum provides a unique, interdisciplinary learning environment that strengthens the students’ ability to solve problems, stimulates the joy of learning math and science, and fosters the excitement of discovery through scientific research.
The Middle School Math and Science Scholars program is scheduled for Monday, July 6- Friday, July 10, 2015. Each day’s session will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. During this time students will have an opportunity to become actively engaged in the learning process by designing and conducting scientific investigations (with a group); communicating scientific procedures, explanations, defending a scientific argument; and using technology and mathematics to improve investigations and communications.
In order to be considered for the program, you must complete the application materials. Please review closely the objectives and section criteria. Completed applications and forms must be received by April 10, 2015. You will be notified of your selection status by May 1, 2015. Thank you for your interest in the ETSU Middle School Math and Science Scholars Program.
