When I graduated in 2009 from ETSU, I had big aspirations and high hopes for my future career in advertising and marketing. That’s one thing that the ETSU Mass Communications program engrains in its students, drive and determination.
My first few years in the work force, I held varying positions, to broaden my professional resume. I began working at Scripps Networks Interactive in the digital department of the Home Category in January 2013. For my first 2.5 years, I worked on post-sale digital elements where I managed the activation of many big client executions and influential convergent campaigns; including Target, Wayfair, Home Depot and Lumber Liquidators. Since I started my career at Scripps, I had always been actively involved with the Home Giveaways, i.e. HGTV Dream Home, HGTV Smart Home, HGTV Urban Oasis and DIY Network Blog Cabin. In September 2016, I was promoted to Manager of the HGTV & DIY Network Home Promotions where myself and my director currently manage all the digital elements included in the four homes listed above. Together the two of us are responsible for bringing in 50% of the digital revenue of Scripps Networks. Moving into this position was a significant and opportune change for me professionally. Now I am involved in every aspect of the homes from start to finish. Visiting each of the homes in the differing cities always brings a new and exciting feeling, making the passion for my job even deeper.
A few things I wish I knew 5 years ago:
1. Don't be scared of veering off the beaten path, most of the time, those make the most memorable experiences and when you actually end up learning the most.
2. Own it, if you make a mistake, just own it. Everyone makes mistakes and you'll get farther admitting it instead of passing blame.
3. Leap and the net will appear.
