The Night Sky

ngc602

Welcome astronomy enthusiasts! This page has been set up by the ETSU professional astronomers to assist the eastern Tennessee community in following current events in astronomy, learning about astronomical events currently going on in the night sky, and providing useful links to interesting astronomy related web sites. This site got its start from a collaboration between the Department of Physics and Astronomy at ETSU and the Johnson City Press newspaper. The Johnson City Press publishes articles on The Night Sky the last Sunday of every month in their Tempo section. These articles are written by the astronomy faculty at ETSU and can be accessed at the links below.

Local Astronomical Events and Research

This section contains articles of important events and research currently happening in astronomy and links to the Department's astronomy Star Party Open House schedule at the ETSU campus Powell Observatory and the ETSU Planetarium Show. The following links will take you to this information.

ETSU Powell Observatory                 Star Party Open House schedule and observatory directions are available here.
ETSU Planetarium                            Planetarium show schedule is available here.
Astronomy at Bays Mountain             Information about astronomy events occurring at Bays Mountain in Kingsport, TN

Current Events in Astronomy

The links below take you to web sites of fascinating astronomical research currently being carried out across the nation, around the world, and in outer space! Many of the web sites below point to the great observatories funded by NASA and NSF (i.e., the National Science Foundation). New sites will continually be added, so check back often.

The Kepler Mission NASA's hunt for extrasolar planets.
Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute           Interesting information about the Hubble Space Telescope.
Chandra X-ray Observatory                                 The Universe at high energies.
Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe                Baby pictures of the Universe taken by WMAP.
Spitzer Space Telescope                                     Learn about the Universe in the infrared.
Solar and Heliospheric Observatory                      Learn about our star, the Sun, from the NASA SOHO space telescope web site.
National Optical Astronomical Observatory           Ground-based observing at the NOAO observatories funded by the NSF.
W. M. Keck Observatory                                     Astronomy to the max with two of the world's (nearly) largest telescopes.
