Pre-Medical / Medical (PMMD) Program
The College of Arts and Sciences and the James H. Quillen College of Medicine offer a combined Premedical-Medical Program. This program coordinates the premedical and medical education components at East Tennessee State University, and provides a strong traditional liberal arts foundation for medical education. All students in this program are required to have a major or a minor in a humanities field as a part of their undergraduate degree. Students will receive both bachelor's and MD degrees. But please note, this program does not shorten the overall time span required to obtain the MD degree.
PURPOSE
Qualified students who wish to seek admission to the PMMD Program must enroll at East Tennessee State University during their freshman year, and must take a prescribed set of approved courses. Near the conclusion of the freshman year, those who qualify by virtue of their performance in the approved courses and other factors may make formal application for admission to the PMMD Program. Criteria for selection include the student's high school record, performance on the ACT and/or SAT standardized examinations, performance in the freshman year courses at ETSU, letters of reference from ETSU faculty and others, and presentation in two or more personal interviews. Students accepted into the PMMD Program will meet all requirements for both the BA/BS and MD degrees. At the completion of the MD degree, each PMMD student will have completed the same full medical curriculum as students in the regular medical school.
The PMMD Program offers certain advantages to the students accepted. It relieves students of the anxiety associated with the regular admissions process that typically occurs at least two years later, and thus enables students to derive maximum benefit from their undergraduate program. It encourages students to pursue interests in the humanities, and thus to broaden the scope of their undergraduate experience. By coordinating the undergraduate and medical components of the student's education, it reduces the repetition of material, that often occurs in typical premedical programs followed by medical programs.
During the freshman year, students who wish to pursue admission to the PMMD Program must register at East Tennessee State University for the following courses (or approved substitutes):
