University Degree Types
There are three degree types available for you at ETSU. They are as follows: Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS), and a Bachelor of Science with a concentration in Social Sciences (what we like to call the BSss). You need to decide what degree type is best for you and then decide on a major concentration. It is good to get advised by a faculty member in your choice of degree and concentration types. To change your degree type, major concentration, and/or minor, use this form.
The differences in degree types, from a practical point of view, are the different courses needed to fulfill the degree requirements. Essentially, they come down to these:
BA: this degree requires proficiency in a single foreign language equivalent to (2) two years at the college level, i.e., (2) 1000 level and (2) 2000 level basic courses
BS: this degree requires a Calculus course in addition to MATH 1530. It does NOT require study in a foreign language.
BSss: this degree is the same as the BS except that the university recognizes the social sciences do not often use calculus-based math, and so it replaces the Calculus requirement of the BS with two courses, which are PSYC 3444 (Computer Methods in Psych) AND either PHIL 2030 or SPCH 2320. This is a Bachelor of Science degree and that is what it will actually say on your diploma; the Social Sciences (ss) distinction is internal to the university and simply denotes the differences in required courses. It likewise does NOT require study in a foreign language.
