On March 25, MSW student Tiara Chante Powell received the MSW Student of the Year Award as part of the NASW-TN 2015 Awards during Social Work Day on the Hill. The award honors a student member of the NASW who has created a positive influence on classmates for the profession, and maintained academic achievement. Tiara was nominated by Dr. Donna Cherry, Assistant Professor at ETSU and NASW-TN Northeast Branch Chair.

Tiara Powell has a history of social work and macro practice having worked as a community organizer in Jacksonville, FL and as a child advocacy coordinator for the Florida Guardian Ad Litem Program. Tiara became a full-time MSW student in the ETSU graduate program in August 2013. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA, she continues to be active in student organizations, currently serving as president of MSWSA and has been inducted into two honor societies: Phi Kappa Phi and the Golden Key. She also continues active involvement in the community volunteering with the American Red Cross blood drives, and working as the Program Coordinator for Diversity Educators-a student group maintained through the ETSU office of Equity and Diversity- where she trains and manages 38 student diversity educators.

"I receive this award in honor of my late cousin, Belverlyn Hill. If it were not for her suggestion of East Tennessee State University, I would not have even known about this great institution in the mountains, and the wonderful and supportive Social Work Department. I know that there are other students that work diligently to uphold the ethics and values of NASW, and I am grateful to have been nominated and subsequently chosen to receive this recognition and honor by the state of Tennessee. It is my wish that the work I have done to educate myself and to develop my skills as a social worker will ultimately help others help themselves and change lives. I am thankful for my family, fiancé, and friends for their love and support. I am thankful for the faculty and staff of the Social Work Department. I am thankful for this opportunity to be recognized. This feels amazing!" ~Tiara Powell

Tiara continues to embody social work with the challenges she accepts and the steps she takes. Congratulations to Tiara Powell and thank you for your hard work and dedication to the field of social work that continues to be a positive impact in the lives of thousands of people.
