Requirements for an Anthropology Minor

A minor consists of 18 credit hours of study in anthropology. The anthropology minor provides students a fundamental understanding of anthropological perspectives on cultural diversity, human biological and cultural evolution, ancient human societies, and the dynamic relationship between biology and culture.

Course requirements:
  • SOAA 1240    Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
  • SOAA 1260    Introduction to Archaeology
  • SOAA 1280    Introduction to Physical Anthropology

Students are encouraged to complete SOAA 1240, SOAA 1260, and SOAA 1280 before enrolling in any elective courses. In consultation with an anthropology advisor, students then choose 3 courses (a total of 9 credit hours) from the list below.

Guided electives:
  • SOAA 2040    Folk Culture in the Modern World
  • SOAA 2150    American Folk Music
  • SOAA 3070    Medical Anthropology
  • SOAA 3080    Nutritional Anthropology
  • SOAA 3250    Environmental Anthropology
  • SOAA 3260    Visual Anthropology
  • SOAA 3400    Human Osteology and Paleontology
  • SOAA 3500    Appalachian Folk Medicine
  • SOAA 3700    Peoples and Cultures of Latin America
  • SOAA 3800    Religion, Society, and Culture
  • ANTH 3903    Prehistory of Southern Appalachia (experimental)
  • SOAA 4007    Archaeology of the Southeastern United States
  • SOAA 4037    Old World Archaeology
  • ANTH 4240    Primatology
  • SOAA 4400    Archaeological Field School (1st Summer Session)
  • SOAA 4410    International Field Experience (summer, experimental)
  • SOAA 4567    Scottish Ethnology
  • SOAA 4627    Ethnographic Field Techniques
  • SOAA 4630    Native American Culture in Contemporary Society
  • ANTH 4830    Anthropological Theory
  • SOAA 4907    Foodways of Appalachia
  • SOAA 4957    Special Topics in Sociology and Anthropology

Students who minor in anthropology with a sociology major cannot apply credit hours acquired for the Anthropology minor to their Sociology major and vice versa. SOAA 4957 is not always anthropological in scope and content. Students should consult with Dr. Jay Franklin, the acting advisor of the Anthropology major & minor program, before enrolling in a special topics course to ensure that the course will count toward the anthropology major/minor.

*** The department now has a major in anthropology. Please let Dr. Franklin know of your interest and send him an email using the link above. ***
