BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTE
Arthur H. DeRosier, Jr., began service as president of East Tennessee State University on July 1, 1977. On April 28, 1978, he was formally inaugurated as the university's fifth president. A university inaugural committee planned and organized a weeklong series of events culminating in DeRosier's inauguration, and this collection documents the committee's work and the events of inaugural week. In addition to the actual inauguration, at DeRosier's suggestion the event was used as an opportunity to focus attention on the Appalachian region that the university served. It included concerts, addresses by noted regional and national figures such Wilma Dykeman, Cratis Williams, Natalia Da Rosa, and journalist Hughes Rudd. An arts, crafts and music festival was held on campus as part of these festivities as was the annual meeting of the Council on Appalachian Women, Inc. One outcome of these events was DeRosier's establishment of an Institute of Appalachian Affairs (forerunner of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services) to study and serve the Appalachian region and make ETSU a regional research university.
DeRosier was born in Norwich, Conn., on February 18, 1931. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi (1953) and the Ph. D. in history from the University of South Carolina (1959). After serving as a professor of history at the Citadel, Converse College, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of Oklahoma, DeRosier became dean of the Graduate School at ETSU in 1967. In 1972, he became the university's vice president for administration. He left campus in 1974 to serve as vice chancellor at the University of Mississippi before returning to ETSU in 1977 as university president.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The collection documents the planning, organization, and events involved in the inauguration of Arthur H. DeRosier, Jr., as ETSU's fifth president in April 1978 and the celebration of the Appalachian region and Appalachian studies that he wanted to see the university embrace and serve. The collection includes correspondence, congratulatory certificates and letters, newsclippings, memoranda, brochures and other printed ephemera, photographs, newspaper negative sheets, and audio and video recordings of inaugural week events that included the formal inauguration, concerts, public lectures, the on-campus annual meeting of the Council on Appalachian Women, Inc., and an arts, crafts and music festival.
