BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
George Naff Dove, the son of John Ruffner and Florence Lee (Sullivan) Dove,
was born in Bristol, Tennessee on October 28, 1913. He received the Bachelor
of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Western Reserve University in 1935 and
1936, respectively. In 1952 he completed the requirements for the Doctor of
Education degree at the University of Tennessee.
He worked as a teacher at Bristol High School from 1936 to 1939, served as principal
of Bristol Junior High School from 1939 to 1945, and as principal of Cheatham
County Central High School in Ashland City, Tennessee from 1945 to 1947.
Dr. Dove's association with East Tennessee State College (now East Tennessee
State University) began in 1947, when he became an associate professor in the
English department. After serving as chairman of the English department from
1951 to 1956, Dr. Dove became director of the School of Arts and Sciences in
1956. When the university was organized into four colleges and one school (1965),
Dr. Dove became the first dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dean Dove
retired in June 1979 after thirty-two years of service to the university.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The George N. Dove Papers were accumulated during Dove's tenure as dean of the
College of Arts and Sciences at ETSU. Included in the papers are correspondence,
committee reports, graduate assistantship contracts, memoranda, minutes, newsclippings,
and evaluation forms.
The papers reflect the interaction between the dean's office and the various
departments of the university. Along with the usual administrative duties, the
dean often arbitrated differences between school personnel, listened to student
grievances, made curriculum decisions, and evaluated departmental chairmen.
Significant subjects in the papers are curriculum proposals, reviews of departmental
chairmen, renewal or non-renewal of faculty contracts, and student enrollments.
The papers date from 1955 to 1980 and are arranged alphabetically by department
name within a single series.
Additional material relating to Dove's tenure as dean is located in the records
of the Dean of Arts and Sciences.
