BACKGROUND NOTE
The School of Arts and Sciences was first organized at East Tennessee State

The dean is the chief administrative officer of the college and reports directly
to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs. The associate dean serves as the
dean's chief administrative assistant. The dean and associate dean are responsible
for the orderly academic operation of the college, communications to faculty
on matters affecting college, carrying out policies adopted by faculty, recommending
policies and procedures to faculty for their consideration, and receiving and
transmitting faculty concerns on policies or actions.
Dr. George N. Dove served as the first dean of arts and sciences. In 1979, Dr.
Robert Botkin held the position; and since 1983, Dr. Jewell Friend has served
as dean. The following have served as associate deans by the time of the original
