BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Sidney Gordon Gilbreath, first president of East Tennessee State Normal School (ETSNS), was born on April 13, 1869 at Hiwassee College, Madisonville, Monroe County, Tennessee. He was the son of James Asbury and Elizabeth Brunner Gilbreath. After attending area public schools, Gilbreath began his career in education even before graduating from college. In either 1886 or 1888, he taught at New Hope public school. Subsequently, he taught at Gaines School, again at New Hope, and then assumed the position of co-principal at Morgantown Academy.

After graduation from Hiwassee College in May 1890, Gilbreath embarked upon a career in educational administration. He was elected superintendent of public schools for Monroe County in May 1891 and was reelected in 1893. Two years later, at the age of 26, Gilbreath became the youngest man ever to be appointed superintendent of schools for the State of Tennessee. He served in that capacity until 1897, when he became president of Hiwassee College, a position he relinquished two years later to take up a law practice. He did not remain in private practice for long, however, as in 1899, he assumed the position of professor of school administration at George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee. Gilbreath remained at Peabody until 1903 when he was elected superintendent of Chattanooga city schools.

Gilbreath's career at East Tennessee State began on September 1, 1910 when he was selected to be the president of the new normal school which was to open in Johnson City in the fall of 1911. Interestingly, Gilbreath had been one of the major supporters and architects of the 1909 General Education Act which provided for the establishment of four normal (two year) schools to train public school teachers.

Gilbreath's tenure at East Tennessee State lasted from 1910 until his resignation in 1925. During that time he accomplished a great deal. He supervised the construction of the normal school's first five buildings and helped recruit the forty students and twenty faculty members who were present for the October 2, 1911 opening of the school. By 1925 the school had grown to include 37 faculty members, 1,238 students, and eight buildings. In 1919 the normal added a third year to its curriculum and in 1924 a fourth year. As a result, in early 1925 the school's name changed to East Tennessee State Teachers College. On March 25, 1925, Gilbreath resigned as president to accept a position with the John C. Winston Publishing Company, as southern manager of the textbook department. He held this position until his retirement in 1940 or 1941. After his retirement, Gilbreath concentrated on writing and lecturing.

Throughout his career Gilbreath was an active participant in such professional organizations as the Southern Conference for Education and Industry, Tennessee Teachers Association, East Tennessee Education Association, and the Tennessee Historical Society. Considered an expert on school law, he served regularly on the committee on school law of the Public School Officers Association.

Gilbreath married for the first time on February 9, 1893 to Norma Lavinia Henley, daughter of Charles F. and Kittie Jones Henley of Monroe County. Gilbreath and his wife had six children, all of whom survived their mother's death in 1942. On March 23, 1943 Gilbreath married again to Allie Lou Felton, a former principal of the demonstration school at Florida State College for Women. They lived in Johnson City, in a home he christened "Hiwassee Hill," after the place of his birth and his alma mater.

Gilbreath was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, the Johnson City Rotary Club, and the Masons. He died on January 6, 1961 at Hiwassee Hill.
