Office were transferred to the University Archives on May 31, 1984 by John Cathey,
director.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Sports Information Office was created c. 1963 and operated under the University
Relations Office at East Tennessee State University. Bill Captain served as
the director from 1963 to 1968. The present director, John Cathey was appointed
in 1969. In July 1985 the office was placed under the office of the Athletic
Director.
The Sports Information Office functions both as a record keeper of statistics on athletes and as a public relations representative for the athletic department. This office is responsible for keeping play-by-play statistics on the athletes participating in each game and for releasing half- time statistics. In addition, the Sports Information Office writes the press releases and publishes brochures for the athletic programs at East Tennessee State University.
The office is presently located in room 146 of the Memorial Center.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Sports Information Office Records contain scoring summaries for basketball
and football games and publications, including pamphlets, game programs, and
press guides for the university's basketball, football, tennis, track, and golf
programs.
The records date from 1964 to 1984, with the bulk of the material from 1970
to 1984. The dates for the scoring summaries are from 1978 to 1983, with the
1982 football summaries missing. The scoring summaries record play-by-play events
in each game and the participation of individual players including position
played, time in play, and action in each game. The collection is divided into
two series: Series I, Scoring Summaries, 1978-1983 and Series II, Publications,
1964-1984.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
Series I, SCORING SUMMARIES, 1969, 1978-1983, Boxes
1-2.
Series I consists of scoring summaries of East Tennessee State University's basketball and
football games. Each scoring summary contains a play-by-play account of the game;
half-time and final statistics; the names of officials; number of people in attendance;
and statistics on individual players participation (eg., yards rushing, tackles, free
throws, field goals, etc.). Also included is a summary of the 1969 Grantland Rice Bowl in
which East Tennessee State participated. The files are arranged alphabetically by the
sport and then chronologically.
Series II, PUBLICATIONS, 1964-1984, Boxes 2-4.
Series II contains publications pertaining to athletic programs at East Tennessee State
University and of athletic events that have been hosted on campus. Included are game
programs, press guides, pamphlets, and brochures. The series covers the sports of
basketball, football, baseball, track, golf, tennis, and marksmanship. The arrangement is
first alphabetical by sport and then chronological.
ITEMS REMOVED
