Provenance: The records of the Office of Contracts and Grants were transferred to the University Archives in June 1984 by Dr. Abbott Brayton on behalf of the Office of Contracts and Grants.

Access: The collection is open for research.

Processing Information: The University Archives Staff completed processing the collection in 1987.

HISTORICAL NOTE

Founded in 1976, the Office of Contracts and Grants has supported faculty research, instruction and service. Since it was created, the office has operated under three directors: Morton Cooper, 1978-1980; M. Burrell Richardson, 1980-1982; and Abbott Brayton, 1982-1984. (In 1983, the director of the Office of Contracts and Grants, Abbott Brayton, reported to the Vice-president for Academic Affairs.)

The purpose of the Office of Contracts and Grants is three-fold:

1. To encourage faculty research efforts.
2. To provide faculty with external funding, technical expertise, and assistance in a proposal development and submission.
3. To provide assistance to faculty in the administration of their projects as needed.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Office of Contracts and Grants Records contain minutes, correspondence, pamphlets, grant proposals, and photographs. The records document the Offices of Contracts and Grants activities with various grant agencies and research projects conducted by the university's faculty, Academic Council, and Research Development Committee. The records date between 1976 and 1983.

The collection is divided into four series: Series I, General Office Files, 1976-1982; Series II, Academic Council Records, 1977-1982; Series III, Research Development Committee Files, 1976-1982; and Series IV, Completed Projects Files, 1977-1980.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series I, GENERAL OFFICE FILES, 1976-1982, Box 1.
Series I contains reports, minutes, correspondence and pamphlets documenting the "American Farm Exhibit," "Veteran Affairs," and "University Networks" projects. The files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Series II, ACADEMIC COUNCIL RECORDS, 1977-1982, Box 1.
Series II contains correspondence, semester curricula, 1982 and 1983 academic calendars, proposals, and council minutes. The records document the university's faculty promotion policy, space and time utilization study, and a proposal for a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Dental Hygiene. The files are arranged alphabetically by type of document.

Series III, RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE RECORDS, 1976-1982, Box 1.
Series III contains minutes, correspondence, reports, grant applications and policies, and university research programs statements. The records document the activities of the Research Development Committee. Files are arranged chronologically.

Series IV, PROJECTS COMPLETED FILES, 1977-1980, Boxes 1-2.
Series IV contains minutes, pamphlets, correspondence, research proposals, and photographs. The records document the treatability of wastewater from a coal gasification plant, endangered bird survey of the Upper Cumberland River Basin, water conservation, origins of country music, and the growth and development of neurons. These files are arranged first alphabetically by the name of the project director and then by the name of the grant agency or project title.

ITEMS REMOVED
One black and white and two color photographs were removed and placed in the University Photographic Archives under Office of Contracts and Grants.
