BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Eleanor Virginia Robertson was born on December 28, 1908 in Fordtown, Tennessee and died on December 28, 1987 in Johnson City, Tennessee. On September 25, 1928 she entered East Tennessee State College, and on June 3, 1932 she received her bachelor's degree. She furthered her education at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, where she received a Master's degree in education in the late 1930s. Robertson began teaching at the Training School (now University School) on the campus of what then was called the State Teachers College, Johnson City in 1944. During the 1947-48 academic year, she served as an exchange teacher to Forfar, Scotland under the newly established Fulbright program. In subsequent, years she travelled widely to numerous countries, among them the Soviet Union, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Egypt, and Japan. She married Douglas E. Scates of Johnson City in 1955. Also in that year she retired from teaching. Mrs. Scates belonged to a number of educational and civic organizations, among them the National Education Association, the Tennessee Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Monday Club Auxiliary, and the British University Women's Association.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Eleanor Robertson Scates Tape is one 90 minute audiocassette of an interview conducted with her by Edwin Greninger, department of history, East Tennessee State University. The interview focuses on discussion of her travels, her experiences as a teacher, and her interaction with and opinions of former East Tennessee State Presidents Charles C. Sherrod and Burgin Dossett.
