BACKGROUND NOTE
The Department of Journalism began during the academic year 1967-1968. At that
time the program largely concentrated on the print media, including news reporting,
magazine and newspaper publication, advertising and public relations. With the
increasing inclusion of courses involving radio and television broadcasting,
in 1979 the department changed its name to the Department of Mass Communications.
In 1982, the name was changed to the Department of Communication when the speech
and theatre programs were added.
In March 1985, journalism instructor Dr. Jerry Hilliard assigned reports on persons for whom some of the East Tennessee State University buildings were named. Thirteen undergraduate students completed the assignment.
