HISTORICAL NOTE

The Delta Eta Chapter of the Delta Zeta Philanthropy Sorority(1) was installed at East Tennessee State College on January 28, 1956 with the induction of ten students and three faculty sponsors. As a chapter of Delta Zeta, the Delta Eta sorority developed an active community service program within the region, providing hearing aids to the hearing impaired in collaboration with the House Ear Institute of Los Angeles and Galludet College for the Deaf in Washington, D. C. In addition to Delta Eta's service work, the chapter participated in most of ETSC's social activities, including the Founders Day celebrations, Mother-Daughter Tea, and State Day.

Delta Eta continued to grow and thrive as an ETSC sorority for several years, and by July 19, 1960 was able to afford to send the chapter's president, Chris Hawkins, to the Sorority's National Convention in Pasadena, California. Student involvement fluctuated dramatically during the late sixties and early seventies, following similar trends at other universities. Delta Eta was not able to rekindle the level of student participation they had experienced during the early 1960s. Around 1989, the organization's charter was revoked because of a declining enrollment and financial support.(2)
