Provenance: The Department of Dental Hygiene Records were acquired by the University Archives in July 1991 from the B. Carroll Reece Museum. The museum has received the early records of the dental hygience program from the Office of the Vice President for Information Resources.
Access: The records are open for research.
Processing Information: Processing of the collection was completed in February 1998.
HISTORICAL NOTE
The Department of Dental Hygiene was organized in 1968 within the College of Health. It
operates at present under the College of Public and Allied Health. In 1969 the first class
of students enrolled with Dr. James Vaught as department chair. Fully accredited by the
Commission on Dental Acceditation of the American Dental Association, the department
trains students for careers in the dental health field.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Department of Dental Hygiene Records contain course syllabi, photographs, sample
forms, and miscellaneous printed matter documenting the organization and teaching
methodology of the department during the period 1968-83. The material describes the
intellectual content of the courses dental students experienced and demonstrates the
practical skills developed by students in the department's dental lab on campus. Much of
this material was part of a reception in 1983 to publicize the department.
Organization: The records are arranged in three series: Series I, Curriculum Records, 1968; Series II, Miscellaneous Records, 1983; and Series III, Photographs, undated.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
Series I, CURRICULUM RECORDS, 1968, Box 1.
This series is composed of records documenting the curriculum content and organization
of the dental hygiene program and consists of copies of the course syllabi used by the
department at the time of its initial operations in the late 1960s along with course
syllabi of other departments required for dental hygiene students. The material is
arranged first in numerical order by course listing for the dental hygiene department and
then alpabetically by course title for other academic departments.
Series II, MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS, 1983, Box 1.
This series consists of a guest book and scrapbook maintained by the department and used at a reception held on December 9, 1983. The scrapbook materials consist of copies of various forms used in student-patient sessions along with photographs of faculty, students, patients, and dental equipment which help document the teaching methodology used by the department at the time of the reception. Scrapbook pages have been removed from the notebook and placed in folders in the order in which the pages were arranged originally. Photographs mounted in the scrapbook have been maintained in the scrapbook pages.
Series III, PHOTOGRAPHS, undated, Box 1.
This series consists of loose photographs which document activities of the department, primarily of the dental clinic operations on campus. The photographs are undated and have been arranged in the following sequence: Dental Clinic; Dental Equipment; Faculty/Students.
