Provenance:
The Earth, Trees, and Seeds University Garden Club Records were donated to the University
Archives on February 28, 1984 by Mrs. Doris Dean, garden club secretary. Additional
materials were donated on April 27, 1989, December 11, 1990, and September 17, 1991 by
Mrs. Betsy Russell and Mrs. Rosalie Russo, past secretary and president of the garden
club.
Access:The collection was opened to researchers on November 25, 1992.
Processing Information: C.Lamb, J.Stinson, S.Schwartz completed processing the collection in 1992.
HISTORICAL NOTE
The Earth, Trees, and Seeds Garden Club was organized in 1954 by members of the East
Tennessee State College faculty, staff, and wives of faculty with a common interest in
gardening and floriculture. In 1960, the Earth, Trees, and Seeds Garden Club became a
member of the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs. The name was changed to Earth, Trees
and Seeds University Garden Club in 1963 when East Tennessee State College was elevated to
university status. The organization was involved in many horticultural activities,
including the Tipton Haynes Historical Landscape Site project and the ETSU campus
beautification project. The Earth, Trees, and Seeds University Garden Club withdrew from
the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs in 1989 and disbanded in 1991.
The Earth, Trees and Seeds University Garden Club Records consist of scrapbooks, accounting records, event programs, correspondence, membership lists and applications, bank statements, photographs, and newsclippings documenting the horticultural activities of the garden club between 1954 and 1991.
The collection is divided into three series: Series I, Organization Records, 1954-1991; Series II, Scrapbooks and Memorabilia, 1963-1985; and Series III, Miscellaneous Publications, 1979-1991.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
Series I, ORGANIZATION RECORDS, 1954-1966 and
1971-1991, Boxes 1-3.
Series I contains financial ledgers, bank statements, membership applications and lists,
receipts, state garden club awards, meeting minutes, and correspondence documenting the
general operation and financial management of the Earth, Trees and Seeds University Garden
Club. The series is divided into two subseries: Subseries I-A, Secretary's Records; and
Subseries I-B Treasurer's Records.
Subseries I-A, SECRETARY'S RECORDS, 1954-1965 and
1972-1987, Box 1.
Subseries I-A contains membership applications and lists, correspondence, and state garden
club awards that were compiled by the garden club's secretary between 1954 and 1987. The
records are arranged chronologically.
Subseries I-B, TREASURER'S RECORDS, 1963-1966 and
1971-1991, Boxes 1-3.
Subseries I-B contains financial ledgers, bank statements, and receipts documenting the
acquisition and expenditure of the garden clubs' funds between 1963 and 1991. The records
are arranged chronologically. Two financial ledgers have been placed at the end of the
series.
Series II, SCRAPBOOKS AND MEMORABILIA, 1963-1985, 17
oversized scrapbooks and 1 oversized map, Boxes 3-5.
Series II contains events programs, club handbooks, photographs, newsclippings, judging
notes, scrapbooks, and an oversized map documenting the flower shows and beautification
projects of the Earth, Trees and Seeds University Garden Club between 1963 and 1985. The
material is arranged alphabetically by document type. The oversized map is stored in the
map cabinet according to accession number.
Series III, PUBLICATIONS, 1964-1991, Box 5.
Series III contains miscellaneous periodicals, bulletins, and a book about horticulture
collected by members of the Earth, Trees and Seeds University Garden Club. The
publications are arranged alphabetically by title.
