HISTORICAL NOTE
The East Tennessee State University Collegium Musicum was an ensemble of musicians
performing English and Italian music of the 16th and 17th centuries. The group was
established by director Scott Schwartz to help musicians from the university and community
better understand the performance practices associated with medieval and renaissance
music. Collegium Musicum, the Latin term for musical guilds, first emerged from
German-speaking states of Europe during the 16th century. It was predominantly tied to the
church and the performance of contemporary sacred music. The East Tennessee State
University Collegium ceased in 1993.
