Provenance: The John P. Lamb, Jr. Collection was transferred to the University Archives by Betty Duncan, executive aide, on behalf of the School of Public and Allied Health, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) on February 16, 1994.

Access: The collection was opened to researchers in March 1997.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John P. Lamb, Jr., received his bachelor's degree from ETSU in 1937 and advanced degrees in public health from Vanderbilt and Yale University. He began his teaching career in health education at ETSU in 1949, becoming the first dean of the College of Health in 1963 and dean of the School of Public and Allied Health from 1978 (when the College of Health was reorganized). He held this office until his death April 10, 1981 at age 64.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The John P. Lamb, Jr. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, and reports related to various issues which involved Lamb as dean of the College of Health at ETSU. Topics cover the construction of the Speech and Hearing Center, the development of a medical school at ETSU, the reorganization of the College of Health into the School of Public and Allied Health, the School of Nursing, and the Appalachian Regional Center for the Healing Arts. Materials are arranged alphabetically by subject and then chronologically within folders, with undated material following dated material. The collection is housed in small collections.
