HISTORICAL NOTE
The School of Arts and Sciences was first organized at East Tennessee State College in
1956. The school became the College of Arts and Sciences in 1966.
The College of Arts and Sciences is one of seven colleges and one school administering the academic programs of East Tennessee State University. It is the largest of these, comprising nineteen departments offering both undergraduate majors as well as graduate programs. The college is headed by a dean who reports to the provost.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The College of Arts and Sciences Promotional Tapes consists of four 3/4" videotapes
of interviews with various persons in the East Tennessee State University community and
the Johnson City, Tennessee community concerning the value of a liberal arts education
along with one 3/4" videotape of upper and middle class homes within the Johnson City
area. The first four videotapes include interviews with Dr. Dorothy C. Dobbins, associate
dean, College of Medicine, Student Affairs, ETSU (length: 13:05); William R. Garwood,
president of Tennessee Eastman Company (length: 2:49); Dr. Hugh LaFollette, professor of
philosophy and humanities, ETSU (length: 16:36); and Kenneth V. Spenser, vice president of
Texas Instruments (length: 12:57). The tapes are arranged alphabetically by subject.
