ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Provenance: The Joe M. Cox Blueprints were donated by Joe M. Cox to the Sherrod Library in September 1963. They were transferred to the Archives of Appalachia in 1979.

Access: The collection was opened to researchers on February 12, 1992.

Processing Information: M.Garant and S.Schwartz completed processing the collection in 1992.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Joe M. Cox was an architect in Johnson City, Tennessee, from c. 1958 until his retirement in 1989. Cox and his wife, Ella A., had one son, Joe M. Cox, Jr., who also became an architect in Johnson City. Joe M. Cox, Sr. began operating Cox Architecture, located on East Main Street, c. 1960. His son joined the company c. 1970 and opened a second office on North Boone Street in Johnson City. In addition to his work at Cox Architecture, Cox, Sr. apparently did "sub-contract" work for Beeson and Beeson Architects, Johnson City, between c. 1975 and c. 1979. Cox Architecture continued operation until c. 1989.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Joe M. Cox Blueprints consists of 39 blueprints created by Johnson City architect Joe M. Cox in September 1963. The blueprints illustrate the general floor plan, electrical and plumbing layouts, heating and ventilation design, and the specifications for the facade of East Tennessee State University's Industrial Education Building, Wilson-Wallis Hall. The blueprints are arranged in numerical page order.
