BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Mary D. Manning was born in 1923 in Deposit, New York and graduated with a B.A. in English (1946) and a B.S. in Library Science (1948) from New York State College (Albany). In the latter year, she and her husband, Ambrose N. Manning (see acc. 131), joined the faculty of then East Tennessee State College (now East Tennessee State University). Mrs. Manning served as librarian at the Training School in 1948-49. From 1952-58, she taught part-time in library science and English, then joined the Department of English as a full-time faculty member in 1958. Specializing in children's literature, Mrs. Manning taught until her retirement in 1983. The Mannings are the parents of four daughters: Martha, Mary, Margaret, and Marie.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Mary D. Manning Interview collection consists of two audiocassette tape recordings of an oral history interview with Manning conducted March 31, 1996 by Marie Graves, a former student. The interview examines Manning's life and teaching career at East Tennessee State University and helps document the history and development of the university and its' Department of English during the period from the late 1940s into the 1980s. Tape 1 is recorded on both the A and B side (approximately 30 minutes each), while Tape 2 which continues the interview is recorded only on side A (approximately 10 minutes).
