The American Association of University Women was first organized in Massachusetts in 1899 as the Association of Collegiate Alumnae. It seeks to promote equality of education and opportunities for women and to enhance educational standards. The national headquarters is in Washington, D. C. The Johnson City, Tenn., chapter was organized at ETSU in the early 1980s. Among its more prominent activities has been sponsorship of the Women's Reentry Scholarship. This scholarship program seeks to assist older, non-traditional female students in attending ETSU.

The American Association of University Women, Johnson City Chapter records document the activities of this educational and professional service organization. Material includes bylaws, correspondence, membership lists, newsletters, awards of scholarships, brochures, and miscellaneous printed ephemera. The collection covers the period 1982-1999 and is arranged into one series of subject files alphabetically by topic.
