Provenance:
The records of the Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs were transferred
to the University Archives by Patsy Pickle on August 28, 1985. The files were
opened for research in March 1986. Additional records transferred to the archives
will be added to the appropriate series.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs was preceded in function
by the Dean of the Faculty. The dean reported directly to the : president and
was responsible for the academic endeavors of all departments. The following
persons served as Dean of the Faculty:
Charles Hodge Mathes, 1911-1921
David Sinclair Burleson, 1921-1946
P. W. Alexander, 1947-1959
Mack P. Davis, 1960-1976
In 1973 the title of this administrator was changed to Vice-President for Academic Affairs. Since 1976, the office has been headed by:
Christopher Bramlett, 1977-1981.
Donald Goodman, Interim Vice-President 1982-1983
Robert J. Alfonso, 1984-1993
Bert C. Bach, 1994-
In the present organization of the university, the Vice-President for Academic Affairs is one of four vice-presidents: Vice-President for Health Affairs; Vice-President for Administration and Development; and the Vice-President for Student Affairs. Reporting directly to the president, the Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs oversees the operation of the academic colleges, graduate studies, contracts and grants office, Faculty Senate, Academic Council, library, and admissions. An organization chart follows. The office is presently located in Dossett Hall, room 206.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The records of the Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs span from
1950 to 1990. However, the bulk of the material is dated since 1960 and covers
the administrations of Vice-Presidents Mack Davis, Christopher Bramlett, Donald
Goodman, and Robert Alfonso.
The records include minutes and related materials of the Academic Council, President's Council, Faculty Senate, Curriculum Committee, and General Education Committee; lists of student's qualifying for the dean's list; and correspondence, program requirements, course outlines and curricula proposal for many of the academic departments and colleges reporting to the vice-president.
In general, the records concern the teaching mission of the university and its faculty. Subjects covered include: the development and revision of curricula; academic requirements; faculty evaluation and tenure; Faculty Senate; and academic freedom.
Organization: The collection is divided into four series: Series I, General Office Files, Series II, President's Council Minutes, Series III, Academic Council Minutes, and Series IV, Curriculum Committee Minutes.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
Series I, GENERAL OFFICE FILES, 1950-1985, Boxes 1-3.
Series I contains correspondence,
course outlines and contents, curricula requirements and newsclippings concerning
Nave Paramedical School; correspondence, notes, programs and brochures relating
to changing from college to university status; Faculty Senate minutes; copies
of the Dean's List; and minutes of the General Education Committee. The files
are arranged alphabetically by subject. Material removed to protect students'
right to privacy has been placed at the end of the series.
Series II, PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL MINUTES, July
1977-February 1984,
Boxes 1-2.
Series II contains minutes, correspondence,
drafts of proposals, and resolutions relating to the meetings of the President's
Council. Subjects covered include academic freedom, occupational safety, university
five year plans, use of campus facilities, university capital outlays, counseling
center, veterans education, student recruitment, scholarships and financial
aid. The files are arranged chronologically. Due to their large size, bound
notebooks for chronological periods were sometimes divided.
Series III, ACADEMIC COUNCIL MINUTES, July
1977-June 1990,
Boxes 1-6.
Series III consists of meeting minutes and memoranda and reports concerning
meetings of and subjects discussed by the Academic Council. Important subjects
include faculty and staff evaluation procedures, grievance procedures, academic
freedom, tenure, space utilization, copyright, and curricula. The files are
arranged chronologically. Large notebooks for chronological periods were subdivided.
Series IV, CURRICULUM COMMITTEE MINUTES, 1959-1982,
Boxes 1-2.
Series IV contains meeting minutes of, and related correspondence, proposals
and reports to the Curriculum Committee. Subjects include miscellaneous curricula
changes in academic departments, including additions and revisions of courses
in graduate and undergraduate programs, development of a doctoral program in
education, and minimum academic requirements. The files are arranged chronologically.
Large notebooks were subdivided.
